Drive Safely on Montana Roads This Spring

Spring in Montana has finally arrived after a long, cold, snowy winter! We’re all used to driving on those icy roads, but now it’s time to shift into spring driving gear. That means we need to remember some crucial safe driving tips for wet roads and windy weather (especially those of us east of the Rockies, where the wind can be brutal).

Whether you’re an experienced Montana driver, a new driver, or new to the area, here are some things to keep in mind when you’re driving through our beautiful state this spring.

1. Slow Down

Similar to driving on ice, remember that driving on water can quickly turn into a slick risk. Even a small amount of rain on the road creates the risk of hydroplaning, which is when the water acts as a sheet, combining with oils on the road, that sends your car sliding.

2. Turn on Your Headlights

Stay visible to other vehicles by turning on your lights. In dark, stormy weather, you need to be seen so others can avoid hitting you.

3. Leave Braking Room

Don’t follow too closely behind the vehicle in front of you, particularly when you’re driving in adverse weather conditions. You need to make sure you’ll be able to come to a sudden, complete stop if the car in front of you brakes. Don’t risk a high-speed collision by tailgating.

4. Leave for Your Destination Early

The best way to avoid driving too quickly or feeling the temptation to tailgate the car in front of you is to leave early so you’re not pressed for time on your drive. Plan ahead and leave earlier than you need to so that rain or wind doesn’t make you late.

5. Check Your Tires

The best way to avoid sliding on wet roads and be able to come to a stop quickly is to have tires with good treads. Review our post on check your tires. Check yours often, at least every few weeks, and always before a big road trip.
